My Tennis Story or How I Forgot How to Fail - Part I

Gary Schwartz October 17, 2021

As I write this blog, the tennis world is gifted with three 20-win grand slam champions, and a one-in-a-generation player with 24 grand slam wins.  I dare to say that tennis has never been better and has never been worse.  The best part is the unequalled skills of the four tennis deities, the worst part is that their age of dominance is over.  The chaos that now has befallen professional tennis overshadows the amazing developments in the sport.  The new equipment is the result of 50 years of innovation and advanced technology.  The rackets, the strings, the sneakers, and the other gear is just amazingly good.  The industry has produced the finest equipment for the sport that allows the highest level of human performance.

If you never leaned with a wood racket, or played in a pair of crappy sneakers, you wouldn’t understand the idea of overcoming the gear.  Other factors played in the difficulty learning tennis too: the unpredictable quality of the tennis court or the fluff from inexpensive balls that made the balls heavy.  I was a good player as a kid, I learned by copying my father’s style of tennis.  He was well known locally, having had an Eastern Tennis ranking of 3 in singles and 1 in doubles.  “Fast Sidney” was famous for being part of “Lieberman’s Leap” in the New York state finals - Google it.

There I was as a gifted 8-year-old, bigger than most kids with a serve way too good for a kid my size and age.  I loved tennis, I would play at drop of a hat, and I asked constantly to take lessons.  The standard lesson plan when I was young was that kids would be able to play for free on open court time.  Many of us kids got dropped off at the tennis clubs to wait for free time to play.  There was also a Friday night ladder, where kids could challenge other players to win and move up or lose and move down.  This was tennis for me for years, and I had the advantage of being bigger and having a good serve.  Nobody noticed the warning signs: I was not mentally ready to be a good player.

The other kids caught up and I was no longer the biggest.  The new wood rackets allowed players to hit harder and with more top spin.  My fitness was fair, but I had size 13 feet and I tended to sprain my ankles when I switched direction quickly.  The other kids were faster than me and worked harder, my serve kept me in the match, but I stopped winning.  My attitude suffered and I started raging on the court, something I did sporadically, and I would throw my racket.  During a tennis tournament at Port Washington Tennis Academy, my father came on the court and took my racket.  I didn’t play tennis for two years after that.

Imagine if you can? A tennis nerd, a person who identifies as a tennis player when describing himself, not playing tennis.  Add to that, I lived with a tennis court in my backyard.  My dad and I fought a great deal, and I was punished by working for the company that put in tennis courts across Long Island.  I carried 75-pound bags of Har-true from the truck back to the court.  Then I would spread out the dusty green clay over the court and smooth it out.  Very dirty work and the Har-true got everywhere.  But I got big and strong and by the age of 16, I was bigger than my dad.  I also learned about how tennis courts are built and maintained.

My sister went away to college, and I was left alone in the house.  My parents traveled a great deal, so I was alone in the house.  My friends would come over and we would get high.  Every single one of them wanted to play tennis, so we would go and play at all hours, and it was fun.  I had become quite fast, and my body caught up to my feet.  No longer was I an injury machine and tennis was both easy and fun again.  But two years made a huge difference in equipment, my wood racket turned out to be old fashioned and most players were now using Prince oversized metal rackets.  In fact, most gear was a great deal better in the 1980’s and I wanted new stuff. Unfortunately, it was really expensive.  I used what I had since I couldn’t afford to buy tennis equipment on my own.  As luck would have it, it was clear that I knew tennis, and my old teacher hired me to teach tennis during the summer before college.

That summer job changed my life and gave me a chance to be a part of the tennis world.  My first semester was a bust and I returned home with no direction.  The five weeks after Christmas were some of the worst of my life. I was forced to get a job or be kicked out, but I wanted to go back to college.  Luckily my SAT scores allowed me to get into LIU Southampton with little effort and I was going back to school after my five-week purgatory.  My mother dropped me off at Southampton in the middle of one of the coldest and snowiest winters on record.  She handed me her old tennis racket and my old wood racket, now restrung, and said that I should play tennis.  The snow was everywhere, but there I was with my tennis gear moving into the dorm in the middle of a snowstorm.

I played four years of Division III college tennis: I was never great, and I never worked very hard.  My serve and my tennis IQ allowed me to play far over my head, but my mental game was horrible.  After all was said and done, I learned how to teach tennis, but I had no idea how to do it myself.  I began teaching tennis after college and was able to become highly regarded as an instructor and it allowed me to make a living.  It also gave me access to the best equipment which definitely helped my game.  My game was competitive to the normal club player, my gear and experience allowed me to beat most of my lessons.

My ability to teach tennis was very good, but my body was beginning to break down.  I had gained a great deal of weight and my right shoulder needed surgery.  I had to stop teaching tennis.  I taught school for more than a decade, but I never stopped thinking about tennis.  Once in a while I would hit against a wall, or volunteer for some public lessons with the USPTA. After not being hired back at my teaching job, I was forced to look for work as a tennis pro.  My 230 lbs. was a big obstacle, but I was able to find work.  I was a good teacher, but my body could no longer endure the hours and the stress.  I eventually lost the job along with 25 pounds.  I luckily found another tennis teaching job for the summer.  My body transformed and I finished the summer another 20 pounds lighter, my weight dropped to its low of 186.

My 46-year-old body broke down by the end of that summer and the simple act of playing became very hard.  I couldn’t find work.  That Fall, Superstorm Sandy damaged my home.  I spent the next three years trapped at home fighting to get my home repaired, fighting the flood insurance company for our money, and looking, unsuccessfully, for work.  I had failed at life, I had failed my family, and had lost all my friends.  I had every excuse not to try, but it was a warm spring day when I forgot how to fail.

2021 US Open was a Grand Slam!

Gary Schwartz September 16, 2021

This year’s tennis at Flushing Meadows reminds me that you win big by winning small.  The last year has devastated professional tennis and, as a business, it has been struggling while tennis popularity is at an all-time high.  Wimbledon 2021 was a minor success, but it failed to make even half of what it did before the pandemic.  This year’s French Open had fans but they were in limited numbers and didn’t come close to tournaments of the past.

NY Tough has been the motto, and so it was the standard operating procedure.  Players adjusted to the new rules but had their families and coaches with them.  Fans had to show that they got the vaccine and strict health protocols were in effect everywhere.  The first day of the tournament had an electricity not felt in two years.  They did it, the US Open was here for business and it didn’t let fans down.  The women’s tournament was full of drama and three-set matches.  In the end, the most unlikely qualifier stood there with the 2021 winner’s trophy.  Emma Raducanu, a British 18-year-old, had done the unthinkable, she won the biggest tournament and made herself a millionaire in a single day.

On the men’s side, Novack Djokovic, was chasing “The Grand Slam,” winning all four grand slam tournaments in a single calendar year.  He lost in the finals to Danil Medvedev, in a blowout.  In a strange twist of fate, Novack finally won the hearts of the crowd, something he had desired for a decade.

The attendance for the finals was staggering, it was packed.  Fans had the choice to wear masks, most kept them on when watching from their seats.  Money was flowing, and people were spending! Fans thought nothing of a $20 cocktail, or a $15 hotdog, they had money to spend!  Each day of the tournament the crowds got bigger, and the fans and athletes adjusted.  New York was back baby and ready for business.  The week after the Open, Broadway started reopening plays and musicals. Oh yes! New York was back.

The idea of controlled growth in the time of the virus is essential to make a business work.  I recently reconnected with my favorite concert organizer and promoter, Rich Rivkin.  He has organized some of the best and most profitable events I have ever attended as a business.  The idea of concert festivals has been out of reach for a while, so Rich rethought what he was doing.  He couldn’t go big, so he went small.  The few events he organized were wildly successful and made him set his sight on going a bit bigger.  He partnered with a local retailer who has glass blowing and allows folks to enjoy cannabis without problems.

Another hit!  Each time, there are more individuals willing to follow the protocols and willing to do anything to hang out, listen to live music, and get high (LEGALLY!!!).  I was incredibly excited to add my company to the mix.  I’ve got games, lots of games.  I too, want to hang out, listen to music and share my games with a group of like-minded individuals.  The Long Island Hash Club, the name of the group, is now part of the Ganja Gaming Guild. I see this as our first-round match and winning means getting bigger and better.

My dream of game nights around the country starts here and now.  I’m joining forces with the Long Island Hash Club and Long Island Glass to make my dream a reality but I’m starting small and showing up for every match ready to win!  I will be there on Friday to show my games, give away some stickers and t-shirts, and maybe find you a perfect game for your next session!

I’m Talking Here… The Art Of Being A New Yorker.

Gary Schwartz February 25, 2021

Yeah, so I’ve lived here all my life, what’s it to you? Born in Queens, I grew up on the north shore of Nassau County, and now live on the south shore.  55 years a Knickerbocker.  I never wanted to live anywhere else and believe that New York is the most beautiful place on Earth (that I have lived!).  My Grandparents lived in NYC on East 57th Street, between 2nd and 3rd Avenues.  I spent a great deal of time with them, enjoying everything New York had to offer.  We ate at Windows on the World, the restaurant at the top of World Trade Center.  Places like the Central Park Zoo, Coney Island, and the Statue of Liberty became favorite destinations for us to visit.  I grew up like a real New Yorker, but I was just a kid from Long Island.

My intimate experience with NYC made me a valuable person to have around if you were going to venture into Manhattan.  I knew the stores on Canal Street where you could buy throwing stars or a sword.  I knew what subway lines to take and how to get in and out of the city with ease.  By the mid-90’s, NYC had made a big come back and things got expensive and crowded.  I found that when I took my wife into the city, it was a huge hassle.  By the year 2000, NYC had changed, and in my mind, not for the better.  The quirky and interesting NYC aesthetic became a over polished Disney-version of New York.

“No!”  I did not adapt to this nicer cleaner version of New York; I had learned in a gritty city and I was prepared for war.  In the late 70’s through the early 90’s, NYC was still a dangerous place where bad things could happen and did.  If you weren’t ready for war, Manhattan wasn’t the place for you to just walk around.  I was ready to fight for every parking space and every place in line.  I kept one hand on my wallet and one hand on my knife.  The 2000’s made me look crazy and people wondered why I was so uptight walking to the subway or on a crowded street.  First, I gave up the weapon habit.  Then, I yielded to the fact the New York was safer.

So?  I’m still talking here!  Just because the city had changed, why did I need to stop being a real New Yorker?  Us New Yorkers speak our minds, and we mix it up a little.  If you’re not gonna fight to prove your point, I guess it wasn’t important enough, huh?  Most millennials hated my attitude, but would act nice to my face.  It was only after did you find out that the 30-something disliked you and posted nasty comments on social media about you and what you said.  What? Did I miss something here? Us New Yorkers say it to your face, or we shut the hell up! When did the people who live in NYC become so squishy?

New Yorkers can do business and seal the deal with a handshake.  We keep our word, and we like to make money.  Us Knickerbockers also have an unwritten rule that we will smash your head in with a bat if you cheat me.  Nothing too serious, just an assurance that all parties do what is in the best interest of the deal.  It ain’t crazy, and courts cost more money, so person to person is the best way to settle business.  Obviously, my NY spirit made doing deals with 30-somethings almost impossible.  Every time, “BOOM!” I said or did something deemed mean or demeaning. Funny part of all my bad business dealings, I never broke my word!  That’s right, New Yorkers got your back and if you play fair with us, with treat you like a partner.  Doing great business is the heart of being a real New Yorker.

The fact is that I’m a Long Islander first, a New Yorker second, and a Knickerbocker through and through.  The kids that grew up on Long Island during the 80’s got the best of two worlds.  We had the majesty of the suburbs of Nassau and the gritty coolness of Manhattan.  I love New York but the folks here are a special kind of weird and I don’t always understand the new ways.  It seems the people of Long Island have no value for the natural beauty and peaceful places anymore and the people of New York have lost their edge and their coolness.  Every once in a while, I meet another New Yorker and we get each other, maybe not agree, but we understand the rules.  I tell people that being a Long Islander/New Yorker is more than attitude or knowing where to get authentic pizza or Chinese food, but it doesn’t hurt!
